Örgryte are back!!!

Örgryte are back in the Allsvenskan. Clinching promotion last weekend the side from Goteborg are back in the big time after 2 seasons in the Superettan.
Having been relegated in 2006 with just 17 points from 26 games the side struggled in the Superettan in 2007.

2007:
The club played poorly and lacked any real ambitions in 2007 and unsurprisingly the team failed to get promoted. Finishing in 10th place and just 4 points from relegation it was not a happy year for Örgryte.

2008:
2008 bought Örgryte with a new chance of getting back into the Allsvenskan. A good start followed by a good summer month run meant Örgryte were on course for a return to the Allsvenskan. Having bought former national team striker Markus Allback to the club, they went on to secure promotion as champions of the Superettan.

Allsvenskan 2008

The Allsvenskan 2008 was the 1st season that Sweden's top flight featured 16 teams. Has the league benefited from this decision? Has the league become stronger?
My opinion is that expanding the league from 14 teams to the present 16 is one of the best things that has happened to the Allsvenskan.
The title race is extended and there are more fixtures and the relegation dog-fight has been very entertaining this season.
The clubs on the left were the 14 from the 2007 season in which only 1 team was relegated and 3 promoted. The 2008 season has seen more games to enjoy and some shocks have been set already. But with 4 rounds to go before the end of the 2008 season we could still yet see twists and turns to come. Kalmar are currently leading the Allsvenskan but with Elfsborg hot on the heels could it be that they take the title?. Or can Norrkoping pull off the great escape? What ever happens the 2008 season has been a major success for the Allsvenskan.

Allsvenskan Round 26 Preview

The Allsvenskan is back this weekend with some great games to be held over the weekend with Kalmar v IFK Göteborg to pick of the lot.

Kalmar v IFK Göteborg

Ljungskile need the 3 points more than Halmstad with relegation fears to overcome the newly-promoted side will be looking for all 3 on Sunday.

GAIS v Malmö
GAIS and Malmö is a mid-table clash with both having noting to play for really. Both sides are well clear of relegation and a long way from European qualification. Malmö though did end the unbeaten run of Örebro before the international break.

Örebro v Helsingborgs
Örebro lost their unbeaten run last time out but still have a home unbeaten run to defend as European-chasing Helsingborgs come to central Sweden. Örebro have driven away from the relegation zone and a win on Monday will secure their top flight status for 2009.

GIF Sundsvall v Gefle
A relegation six-pointer on Monday night as GIF Sundsvall host Gefle in what should be a great game. A win wont secure top flight status but should raise morale to the victor but it should be a cracker.

Hammarby v Djurgården
The big Stockholm-derby which over the years has had crowd trouble takes place on Monday night with Hammarby looking for a UEFA Cup place. Djurgården's poor form earlier in the year has seen them out of the European places and need a win to claim the bragging rights of Stockholm.

Elfsborg v Trelleborgs

Örebro what a turnaround

Örebro have been regular strugglers in the Allsvenskan for a few years. But since 20th July the side form central Sweden have stayed unbeaten. Having not lost since a 1-0 defeat away to Hammarby back in July, Sixten Boström's side have turned around a relegation dog-fight into a mid-table safety position in 6 games. What makes this run special is that Örebro have played teams in the top 4 and stayed unbeaten.
Örebro who just avoided relegation in 2007 are only 6 games away from completing a half-season unbeaten run. What Örebro have is hard-working players. Nordin Gerzic is a star player who gives 110% every game and with the pace of Eric Bassombeng and the goal poacher Kim Olsen is it any wonder Örebro are doing so well. The Behrn Arena has become a fortress for Örebro and if Örebro had done this all year we could be seeing a title challenge from the whites.
Walker out:
Örebro have been on the scene a good while and last winter the club announced that Irish manager Patrick Walker was leaving the club for a job in Norway. In came Sixten Boström and he was tasked of avoiding relegation in 2008. Örebro lost midfielder Kevin Walker to AIK leaving Robert Walker as the last of the trio to stay. Örebro came remain unbeaten and if they finish out the season unbeaten maybe 2009 will be a sucessful year.

Helsingborgs were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from René Makondele and Henrik Larsson. Helsingborgs needing the win to catch up with Elfsborg in the table thought they had won it at half-time.
