Allsvenskan preliminary start date

The Allsvenskan has announced a preliminary start date of April 2009 has the start of the 2009 Allsvenskan.
With the Fixtures the be announced in the new year many changes are being made. The new Ullevi Stadium in Goteborg is open and Malmo plan to move into their new stadium in next summer while Kalmar are thinking about building a new stadium.
So far there have been major departures from the league with Johan Wiland heading south to Denmark, Viktor Elm and Patrik Ingelsten heading to Holland and Kusi Asare going to Denmark.
But one team has so far remained silent ever since the Allsvenskan finished in November. Hammarby from Stockholm have been very silent with no transfers in or out yet and new change of coach. But speculation as to Charlie Davies' future is still going around. The American has made no secret of a move abroad possibly next year but he remains a Hammarby player.

Villa say no to Larsson

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has played down rumors of a bid for Helsingborgs' striker Henrik Larsson.
Larsson spent seven years under O'Neill at Celtic and some suggested a bid was likely but O'Neill, speaking after his side beat Everton 3-2 on Sunday was asked about the situation and O'Neill went on to say he wanted Larsson's Celtic spell to remain as a very positive memory.
Larsson has been followed by Everton, PSG and has amazingly rumored to have received an offer from Al-Rayyan in Qatar.
Helsingborgs have said that they will offer Henrik a new 1-year deal to keep him for this coming season Helsingborgs who finished 4th last season need to keep their star players and Larsson is certainly a star player.

Kalmar strengthen team

2008 Allsvenskan winners Kalmar have raided Ljungskile for Daryl Smylie. The Northern Ireland man had been on Kalmar's wanted list as soon as the season ended.
Smylie suffered relegation with Ljungskile last month when they lost to IF Brommapojkarna in the play-off. Ljungskile were reluctant to sell but it was clear that a player of his class should remain in the Allsvenskan.

Daryl Smylie:
Daryl Smylie is a Northern Ireland international and previously played with Newcastle in England. A move to Livingston in Scotland followed and he left Livingston in 2007 to join Ostersund in the Swedish Division 1. He impressed while at the club and Ljungskile signed him and had an impressive season in 2008 despite relegation. Smylie joins Kalmar with the task of replacing Viktor Elm who has joined Heerenveen in Holland.

In early 2007 Larsson joined Man United on loan and returned to Helsingborgs for the start of the 2007 Allsvenskan.

Elfsborg set for Exodus

Allsvenskan runner's-up Elfsborg are preparing for an uncertain winter. A bulk of the side that finished 2nd to Kalmar are expected to leave the club.
Elfsborg coach Magnus Haglund could also by on his way after the 2nd place finish but nothing has been confirmed by the Borås based club.

Goodbye Wiland:
One major departure already confirmed is Johan Wiland. The Elfsborg No.1 is leaving for Denmark's FC Kobenhavn and will join up with Cesar Santin who also left the Allsvenskan in July. Wiland's future was always in doubt after a great season. Rumours had it that Tottenham were interested but Wiland will be a Kobenhavn player on Januray 1st.

Other potential departures:
Former Portsmouth striker James Keene could also be on his way with Blackpool and Ipswich interested. Keene has another 3 years left on his contract that he signed when he joined Elfsborg last year.
The future of Anders Svensson has been rife for some time and weather he makes a move abroad remains sealed. Elfsborg would like to keep him for next season but a good offer might be too good for Elfsborg.
Lasse Nilsson is all set for his return to Saint-Étienne after a successful loan spell last season. But Elfsborg have received offers for Swedish-Albanian Emir Bajrami. Rumours have it that he will be in Serie A in January.

Sigurður Jónsson quits Djurgårdens

Sigurður Jónsson has quit as manager of Djurgårdens. The former Iceland and Sheffield Wednesday star has left in the wake of Djurgårdens awful 2008 season in which the Stockholm side were never in contention for the title.
Sigurður Jónsson also known as "Siggi Jónsson" is rumoured to be managing in Iceland next year. Djurgårdens will be looking for a new coach with the club to announce candidates in the coming weeks.

Ibrahimović wins player of the year again

Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimović has been named Swedish player of the year for a 3rd time. Zlatan won the prize on Monday in Stockholm's Globe Arena.
Ibrahimović had a great year with Inter Milan winning a 3rd successive Serie A title and helping them with 17 goals in 26 Serie A matches in 2007-08.

Ibrahimović who first won the prize in 2005 was honoured by Brazilian legend Pele. The former Ajax and Juventus star has scored 20 goals in 57 games for Sweden and hopes to add more next year when the next round of qualifiers come.
Ibrahimović also won last year's award after helping Inter Milan to the Serie A title in 2006-07.

Sweden 2008 Review

Sweden have ended 2008 with defeat to Holland last night but overall 2008 could've been better.
The year began with the traditional American tour in January with 2 games against Costa Rica and the United States.
Sweden beat Costa Rica 1-0 before losing 2-0 against the United States. The tour concisted of players playing in the Allsvenskan.
February saw a 0-0 away draw against Turkey which was a good result for Sweden. The atmosphere within Turkey made it very difficult for Sweden but still came away with a draw.
March saw former world champions Brazil play Sweden in Arsenal's Emirates Stadium but Brazil ended up winning 1-0 thanks to Alexandre Pato.
The Pre-Euro 2008 games saw Sweden play Slovenia at home. Despite a lot of pressure Sweden won 1-0. The next friendly was against Ukraine in Stockholm and a Rami Shaaban error cost Sweden in the 1-0 defeat.

Euro 2008:
Pitted in Group D with European champions Greece, difficult Russia and underachieving Spain that group was always going to be tough for Sweden.
It began greatly with a 2-0 defeat of Greece. Sweden were off to a flyer before the lost to Spain 2-1 leaving Sweden with a must-win game against Russia to qualify for the Quarter-finals. Russia beat the Swedes 2-0 to progress and there were calls for coach Lars Lagerbäck to resign.

He stayed put and Sweden's next game was an August friendly against France at home. A brave display wasn't enough as France left Sweden with a 3-2 win. Sweden had a very important World Cup Qualifier against Albania in September but after a 0-0 draw people wanted Lars Lagerbäck out.
October presented Sweden with a chance of getting points and after a vital 2-1 win over Hungary the team did well to get a point off Portugal. That draw left Sweden in 5th place with 5 points from 3 games going into next year's matches.
November saw last night's 3-1 defeat away to Holland end Sweden's disappointing year with defeat.

Holland 3-1 Sweden 19th November 2008

Holland 3-1 Sweden
Sweden suffered defeat away to Holland last night as the Dutch came away with a 3-1 win. Arsenal's Robin Van Persie gave Holland the lead on 33 minutes before making it 2-0 on 50 minutes.
Holland had chances with Dirk Kuyt coming close on a few occasions and Sweden had their share of chances with Larsson coming close.
Kim Källström silenced the home crowd with a delightful shot from outside the area on 51 minutes. Despite Michel Vorm getting a hand to the shot Kim Källström still got the goal.
Sweden tried to push for an equalizer but Holland looked more likely in getting a 3rd goal. That 3rd goal arrived in injury-time when a fine cross was headed in by Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt. So Holland win but Sweden had their chances.

Swedes in Holland

Sweden gear up for a trip against traditional European Powerhouse Holland in Amsterdam tonight with no fewer than 5 players in the squad who play their club football in Holland.
Of the those five midfielder Rasmus Lindgren of Ajax plays his football at tonight's venue the Amsterdam ArenA.
Andreas Isaksson of PSV has only played in Holland for 3 months while Andreas Grandqvist, Marcus Berg and Petter Andersson are all team mates at FC Groningen.
Having such a large number playing in Holland should serve Sweden well. But it also means that they would know what players to look out for and what way the pitch is.

Allsvenskan?
But Sweden have a big number of players playing abroad. In this squad there is just 2 home-based players. Daniel Andersson of Malmö and Henrik Larsson of Helsingborgs. This is a problem for Allsvenskan players who think that maybe playing abroad will give them a call-up.
In the Allsvenskan a number of Swedish players stood out such as Patrik Ingelsten, Viktor Elm, Robin Söder and Agon Mehmeti.

Sweden's national side will take on Euro 2008 quarter-finalists Holland on Wednesday looking for a win.

Lars Lagerbäck has called up Elfsborg's Johan Wiland as 2nd keeper to Andreas Isaksson of Holland's PSV. Helsingborgs's Henrik Larsson is set to make his 102 appearance for Sweden and there is a place for Christian Wilhelmsson, who has been playing for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. IF Brommapojkarna 0-0 Ljungskile 13th November 2008

IF Brommapojkarna 0-0 Ljungskile
No doubt IF Brommapojkarna will be the happier of the two sides after a 0-0 first leg. Ljungskile failed to find an away goal and will need goals on Sunday.
A dull game to be honest with very few chances at either end but Ljungskile's Niklas Löfgren coming close on two occasions. IF Brommapojkarna decided to play defensive and got the result they needed and need only a score draw to win.

IF Brommapojkarna:
K.Nordfeldt (g.k): J.Persson, P.Asp, R.Henriksson, M.Karlsson: M.Albornoz, P.Haglund: Milko Albornoz, J.Hagernäs, C.Youssef: J.Runnemo subs: B.Lekström (g.k), S.Bergtoft, A.Talebinejad, S.Ayranci, M.Clauss

Allsvenskan Keepers!

The Allsvenskan has seen some great keepers and all 16 1st choice keepers are reviewed.

AIK:
Tomi Maanoja kept AIK in the hunt for a Europa League place but couldn't quiet manage it. He had a good season and will be 1st Choice next season if he stays.

Djurgården:
Pa Dembo Touray was a huge presence between the sticks for Djurgården's awful season. A team that didn't play well at all could've been worse had Touray not been there. The Gambian deserves credit for his displays throughout the season.

Elfsborg:
Highly regarded as the best keeper in the Allsvenskan, Johan Wiland was simply awesome as Elfsborg narrowly lost the title. His displays have attracted interest abroad so it will be interesting to see what happens over the winter.

GAIS:
A difficult season for Dime Jankulovski as he had to called upon so many times during the season to save GAIS. Although he played well the team didn't really so GAIS finished mid-table. Dime Jankulovski can be satisfied with 2008 as he played brilliantly at times.

Gefle:
Gefle amazingly avoided the drop thanks to keeper Mattias Hugosson. The Gefle no.1 played very well and pulled off great saves during the 2008 season. He deserves credit for his part in the great escape.

GIF Sundsvall:
Fredrik Sundfors was a busy man as Sundsvall ended the season with relegation back down to the Suprettan. It is unclear whether he will remain with Sundsvall. Despite his heroics Fredrik Sundfors will see it as a poor season.

Halmstads:
What Halmstads will want this winter is for Magnus Bahne to stay at the club. It will be hard as despite an off season he kept Halmstads in the hunt for Europe. Bahne is rumoured to be on his way to Switzerland with Basel so watch this space.

Hammarby:
Kristoffer Björklund proved that he was a good keeper after leaving Brommapojkarna last winter to join Hammarby. He displaced Rami Shaaban and made stunning saves. The now undisputed No.1 has been so impressive it is being reported he might be on the plane to Sweden's tour of America.

IFK Göteborg:
Kim Christensen moved from FC Kobenhavn to IFK last winter and proved the switch was a good one by helping IFK to a 3rd place finish in the Allsvenskan. Despite them not retaining their crown Christensen will be happy with his 1st year in Swedish football.

IFK Norrköpping:
What would've happened if Nuredin Bakiu hadn't keep goal for IFK. Missing just one league game all season Bakiu played the most part in IFK's relegation. Bakiu will surely not stay with IFK as he could want to stay in the Allsvenskan.

Kalmar:
Petter Wastå was a key player in Kalmar's title success. Petter Wastå also keen on a move abroad will use his displays this season as a reason to leave.

Ljungskile:
Colin Burns was the no.1 during the season for Ljungskile with just 15 games played during the season the American kept Ljungskile in the league for the play-off and will no doubt be eager to avoid the drop.

Malmö:
Jonas Standqvist was a real headache for strikers this season as he kept most quiet. The former Landskrona keeper was Malmö's top player during the season.

Örebro:
John Alvbåge was possibly the best keeper in the Allsvenskan during the unbeaten run. Saving a penalty and numerous saves he stood out.

Trelleborgs:
Fredrik Persson kept Trelleborgs in the Allsvenskan and played good as Trelleborgs struggle at the start of the season.

Allsvenskan Top Scorers

The 2008 Allsvenskan golden boot went to a Kalmar FF player. Patrik Ingelsten was the main man behind Kalmar's title win scoring 23 goals in all competition during 2008. Although Viktor Elm was just a goal behind him in the Kalmar list Ingelsten remained as the threat after César Santín left in July.
Patrik Ingelsten Viktor Elm

Halmstads Anselmo had a good season on the scoring front with no fewer than 15 league goals. He finished joint 2nd with Kalmar's Viktor Elm and will be a major concern next season for defences if he decides to remain with Halmstads.
Hammarby's USA international Charlie Davies was influencial as ever during the 2008 season with 14 league goals. A marked improvment on 2007 were he got just 3 goals. Finishing in joint 4th was Helsingborgs Henrik Larsson. The legendary Swede had a quiet year but did enough to secure Helsingborgs with a Europa League place.

Charlie Davies Henrik Larsson

A special mention has to be reserved to Örebro's Kim Olsen. The big Dane was instrumental in Örebro's 7th place finish their highest since 1998. A hat-trick against IFK Göteborg sent him on his way to 9 league goals during what was a fantastic season for the central sweden side.

Kim Olsen

Allsvenskan Relegation-Promotion play-off

Ljungskile v IF Brommapojkarna
Ljungskile will be fighting for their Allsvenskan status that was achieved in 2007. The newly-promoted team from last season finished 14th this season and thus enter the play-off with IF Brommapojkarna.

Ljungskile
Ljungskile were in real danger in going down automatically after losing 3-0 away on the final day but were saved as GIF Sundsvall lost 6-0 to go down when they needed the win. But the test really begins for Ljungskile. Surviving the 1st test when they could've went down last weekend had it not been for Sundsvall's bad luck. IF Brommapojkarna will be now pushovers for Ljungskile.

IF Brommapojkarna:
IF Brommapojkarna based in Stockholm are an awkward type of opponent. The team who play in black and red were relegated from the Allsvenskan in 2007 having lost out on the final day. 2008 though has been a good year for the Stockholm side. Sneaking into the play-off position after beating Degerfors and Assriyaska lost.

Key Players:
Joakim Runnemo will be Brommapojkarna's key for the play-off. The Swede who scored 14 league goals for Brommapojkarna's promotion push this season will be eager to play Ljungskile to add to his goal collection. While Ljungskile will be looking towards their top scorer. Niklas Lofgren

2008 Season review

The 2008 season ended yesterday with a full 10 months of breathtaking football behind us now we can take a chance and remember the best matches, goals and shock results.
Title Race:
The title race was very entertaining with Kalmar and Elfsborg neck and neck and towards the end of the season those two broke away from Helsingborgs and IFK Göteborg.
The title race saw both Kalmar and Elfsborg lose on crucial days with Kalmar extending their lead and Elfsborg shortening the lead. In the end Kalmar's 1st Allsvenskan title was inevitable with a 6-0 win over IFK Norrköping they all but secured their title. They wrapped up the season with the title and former UEFA president Lennart Johannson handed the trophy over to the 2008 winners.

Race for Europe:
Kalmar's title win ensured them of a place in next summer's champions league qualifiers and Elfsborg secured a place in the Europa League. IFK Göteborg and Helsingborgs sealed the remaining 2 Europa League places but over the season the likes of AIK, Hammarby and Halmstads were in the running.

Örebro's amazing run:
Örebro were just outside the relegation zone on July 28th 2008 when they faced European hopefuls Hammarby. A fantastic performance ended with a 1-1 draw and from then Örebro went on an amazing unbeaten run.
Örebro remained unbeaten from 28th July to 6th October with them remaining unbeaten against the likes of Kalmar, IFK Göteborg and Helsingborgs. They eventually finished 7th.

Relegation battle:
The relegation battle was entertaining while pre-season underdogs Trelleborgs and Örebro stayed away from trouble with ease it was IFK Norrköping and GIF Sundsvall both going down having just been promoted in 2007. Ljungskile's fate remains in the play-off with Brommapojkarna and who knows what will happen.

Örebro 3-0 Ljungskile

Kalmar for the Allsvenskan?

Kalmar's title charge this season has been possible thanks to a lot of players who played consistently over the 2008 season.
Viktor Elm, Patrik Ingelsten, Petter Wastå and Cesar Santin all helped Kalmar reach this stage where they are on the verge of being crowned champions of Sweden.
When Kalmar announced earlier in the year that key player Cesar Santin was leaving the club for FC Kobenhavn in Denmark many predicted a failed title attempt.
But the team kept going despite defeats along the way. But Kalmar will be hoping for the title as a fare-well present to Viktor Elm.
Kalmar did launch a title bid in 2007 but were undone by IFK Göteborg and ultimately failed to win the Allsvenskan. This season Kalmar have forgotten about 2007 and have sailed towards finally lifting the Allsvenskan trophy. Despite the pressure of Elfsborg for most of the season Kalmar have kept a 3 point lead over them for much of the season and if there is an award for deserving the title it has to be Kalmar, who have lead the Allsvenskan for much of the season.

Allsvenskan Final Day Preview

The 2008 Allsvenskan comes to an end tomorrow and still there are issues to be solved. Firstly the title race has to be solved with Kalmar the leaders 3 points ahead of Elfsborg. Secondly the automatic relegation has to be solved as well. GIF Sundsvall and Ljungskile.

GAIS v AIK
This game will be important for AIK as they look to finish as high up the table as possible. Although GAIS will be up for it AIK could give Kevin Walker, Kenny Pavey and Timo Maanoja starts.

Malmö v GIF Sundsvall
No question about how need the points more with Sundsvall in real danger in going straight back down to the Suprettan. Robert Mambo-Mumba could start as GIF Sundsvall will fight for a place in the relegation play-off.

Helsingborgs v IFK Göteborg
4th against 3rd on Sunday at the Olympia is on the agenda and both know that their places in European competition next summer are secured. So Helsingborgs will field a weakened team without Henrik Larsson possibly. IFK Göteborg will rest Robin Söder as he recovers from an injury.

IFK Norrköping v Hammarby
Given that IFK Norrköping are already relegated and Hammarby will be eager for a win to bounce back from Monday's mauling, Hammarby will be the clear favourites for this one. Charlie Davies will be looking to get a few goals to end the season just as he did last year with a hat-trick on the final day of 2007. IFK Norrköpping will hope that is not the case.

Halmstads v Kalmar
Halmstads can stop Kalmar from winning the Allsvenskan by beating them and giving Elfsborg a chance. Though Kalmar will be looking to Viktor Elm for goals as he hit 4 last weekend and Patrik Ingelsten could get among the goals. Halmstads will be no pushovers and will be up for this game.

Gefle v Elfsborg
Gefle are safe from relegation so Elfsborg will take advantage of a side that has nothing to play for. Elfsborg need nine goals to win the title and thats if Kalmar lose 1-0. But with Gefle having nothing to play for it could be possible but don't bet on it.

Djurgården v Trelleborgs
Djurgården's mediocre season will end with a home game against Trelleborgs with the visitors a point ahead of the Stockholm side. Siggi Jonson will be hoping his side will end the season on a high and the Icelander will be looking towards 2009.

Örebro v Ljungskile
Örebro can send Ljungskile into a nervous Sunday afternoon if they can keep up their home form. Ljungskile will be hoping to get a point to secure a play-off with IF Brommapojkarna and fight for their status for 2009. Örebro will be hoping for a win to secure their highest league finish in years.

All kick-off times are at 15:00pm CET.
