GAIS 2-2 Kalmar 24th May 2009

The champions showed some of the spirit of 2008 as they fought back from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw at the hands of GAIS. Whats more it come in the final 2 minutes. He then made it 2-0 on 81 minutes and then it looked like GAIS would go on and win. But Kalmar had other ideas and Daniel Mendes pulled a goal back with a minute left. AIK: New dawn?

AIK have improved a lot since 2008's flop of a season. AIK made steady progress in 2006 when finishing a point behind Elfsborg in the title race and a year later in 2007 they fell off the pace and finished 5th. But last season they had an awful year. Never close to getting into Europe they did need a late revival to finish 5th but a massive 19 points off the title.

But the class of 2009 have made a good solid start to the season going into the 10th round of matches they were 4th and a point behind leaders Elfsborg. 2009 has seen Iván Obolo take stage and he has returned with 4 league goals so far. A total of 10 league goals in 2008 could well be beaten by the hitman. No.1 keeper Tomi Manooja was ruled out of the 2009 season with a broken leg leaving Daniel Örlund to keep goal and he has not done a bad job. He has kept 4 clean sheets so far.

But with injured players like Manooja out for the long term can AIK really put in a title challenge? Kenny Pavey has come in with his assists while Iván Obolo is scoring and Daniel Örlund is making crucial saves. But with a few injured players AIK will have to watch the disipline side of things. Kenny Pavey does get booked and so does Obolo. But the fans will want Europa league qualification at least and with a squad that AIK has it is within reach.

Örgryte struggle?

After 7 games back in the Allsvenskan Örgryte have not had the start they wanted nor what people expected. Örgryte are based in Sweden's 2nd city of Göteborg. But what has gone wrong for Örgryte. Having won the 2008 Suprettan by 2 points from fellow Göteborg side BK Häcken some expected them to have the best chance of staying up in 2009? After 7 games BK Häcken were 2 points clear of the play-off place, IF Brommapojkarna were 5th and Örgryte were bottom and just secured their 1st point of 2009.

3 goals scored in 7 games and having shipped 16 goals in the process including an opening 1-5 loss to GAIS, also from Göteborg. That is relegation form and Örgryte need to change rapidly if they are to avoid what happened to IFK Norrköping in 2008. IFK made a poor start and found themselves well off safety by the mid-point last year and eventually got relegated. It is just 7 games but Örgryte need wins now to kick-start their season!

IFK Göteborg 3-0 Gefle 7th May 2009

IFK Göteborg returned to winning ways after losing to Elfsborg by beating Gefle 3-0 here. Pontus Wernbloom, departing in June to AZ Alkmaar opened the scoring on 27 minutes and just 10 minutes later he made it 2-0. Ragnar Sigurdsson made it 3-0 on 64 minutes as Gefle were blown apart. A much needed win for IFK Göteborg.
